The Miracle of Misión Mundial. Perspectives for Spanish Speakers in Canada By Charlene de Haan When I came on board with CAM Canada in 2010, one of the first thoughts to cross my mind was the question, “Is the Perspectives course available in Spanish?” Based on my class participation in 2007, Perspectives seemed like a perfect fit with CAM’s mission. Hispanics make up 1.8% of Canada’s population. Between 2001 and 2006 Canada’s Hispanic population grew by 20.9% compared to a total population growth of 5.4%. The 2006 Canadian Census reports significant settlements in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The potential to empower Canadian Spanish-speaking believers to reach the world, by God’s grace, is profound.
After approaching The Intercultural Ministries (TIM) Centre at Tyndale College to ask if they would collaborate to launch such a course, they brought Latin America Mission (LAM) into the conversation. From our first meeting, a threefold cord was established. Near the end of January 2011, God opened the door for a brief presentation to the Toronto Spanish Pastors Association. Even after so much time and prayer was invested, still I was not prepared for their enthusiastic response.
They wanted Misión Mundial to begin in March. They encouraged their congregations to attend—especially their youth. They stretched my vision for 12-20 participants by stating “plan for 50!” Iglesia Nuevo Amanecer was eager to host the course and send 30 people preparing for a short-term trip to Columbia. Another pastor sent his discipleship group. Kingdom Intercessors were now praying for 50 students. Since orders are required in case lots, 72 books arrived 24 hours before our second presentation to the Spanish-speaking pastors. God was revealing His miracle.
One student said, “Where will the miracle of Misión Mundial extend next? Interest has been expressed in Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver and Cuba. Jonathan Lewis is translating book 2 to address the cultural and strategic perspectives of world missions. We don’t yet know where or when the next miracle will unfold. We do know that God uses our prayers to change us and to change the world. As Walter Wink puts it, History belongs to the intercessors who believe the future into being. Will you invest your prayers in the next Misión Mundial miracle?
