ARTICLES AND ESSAYSMotivational speaker Ian Percy, who grew up as an MK (missionary kid) in Nigeria, has published a list he calls “The 11 Commandments for an Enthusiastic Team.” The ninth commandment reads, “Whatever you want . . . give it away.” He was sitting in his dentist’s chair when he realized the poster on the wall was a pirated version of his 11 Commandments. A bank had taken his list and reduced it to 10 Commandments. Number 9 was missing—they left it out because they just didn’t get it. But that truth, one of the great paradoxes of the Christian faith, is at the heart of Christmas. At this season, we celebrate the birth of Christ, by which God gave us the gift of himself. Jesus was called Immanuel because he was “God with us.” But God, in giving himself, got back his Son, and so much more, for through him he reconciled “all things to himself, having made peace through the blood of his cross” (Col 1:20). What do you want for Christmas? Try God’s way—try giving it away. Is it release from loneliness that you desire? For people who are on their own, whatever their age, Christmas can be the loneliest time of the year. In reaching out to such a person, you may find unexpected comfort for yourself. Perhaps you wish for happy memories of the holidays. Christmas is a great family occasion, and a reminder of times past, but the memories may be painful. You can begin now to make happy memories with the family you have. Do you want your support team to pray for you? Pray for them. Whatever you want this Christmas . . . try giving it away. 2009 ©Jonathan Edwards | Director of Member Care, CAM International
